A Boy’s Depression Lifts with Therapy
Jordan experienced a remarkable turnaround with help from A Better Way’s therapist.
Jordan is 14 years old. He lives with his grandmother, who works full-time. Jordan was suffering from severe depression. He was isolated from friends and spending a lot of time alone playing video games. His only interactions with his grandmother were arguments, and their home had become a place of conflict.
Our mental health clinician started by inviting both of them to listen to one another’s experiences and to hear each other’s hopes for their family. In this space they rediscovered their ability to relate to each other without conflict. This set the stage for further healing.
Our clinician then helped the family understand that peer interaction and physical activity are powerful tools to fight depression. She accompanied the family to a gym, where Jordan wanted to get a membership. Building on the improved communication, she facilitated a respectful dialogue: Grandmother listened to Jordan’s reasons for wanting to join the gym. Jordan listened to his grandmother’s concerns about community safety. Together they created rules for gym visits to ensure safety.
Jordan started going to the gym several times a week, gaining confidence & independence. His mood improved rapidly. His grandmother observed how Jordan respected the safety rules, and the trust between them grew. It was a remarkable turnaround!
