Lila’s Forever Family

When Lila came to A Better Way, she was six years old and carrying more than any child should. She had lived in several homes and did not always know who she could trust. Big feelings came out in big ways. At school, she struggled to focus and sometimes felt overwhelmed. At night, she had nightmares and wet the bed.

Lila began therapy with Ms. Renee, a mental health clinician at A Better Way. At first, Lila was quiet. She shared her feelings through play instead of words. Her games were full of conflict and chaos, reflecting how unsure she felt inside.

Each week, Ms. Renee met with Lila to help her understand her emotions and feel safe expressing them. She also met with Lila’s caregivers, helping them learn how trauma affects children and how patience, routine, and reassurance can help a child heal. Slowly, trust began to grow.

Over time, something powerful happened. Lila’s foster parents, birth parents, and care team worked together with a shared goal of supporting her well-being. They created a circle of care that helped Lila feel protected and loved. For the first time, her world began to feel steady.

After more than two years in the child welfare system, Lila’s case closed. Her foster parents adopted her, and they made an agreement with her birth parents so Lila could stay connected through visits and phone calls. Knowing she would stay in one home while still honoring important relationships gave her a sense of peace.

Today, Lila is thriving. Her play is calmer and filled with helpers and happy endings. She uses her words when she feels upset and is making friends at school. Her confidence has grown, and so has her joy.

Lila’s story shows what is possible when children feel safe, supported, and loved.
